DTF vs DTG Printing: Which Should You Choose?

DTG and DTF are both full-color digital methods — no screens, no per-color setup, great for small runs and photo-real art. The difference is where the ink goes: DTG prints straight into the fabric; DTF prints onto a film, then heat-presses that film onto the garment. That one difference drives everything else.
DTG (direct-to-garment)
- Feel: ink soaks into the shirt — soft, almost no hand. Best on the garment.
- Fabric: shines on 100% cotton; weaker on polyester and nylon.
- Look: photographic detail and gradients on light garments; darks need a white underbase.
DTF (direct-to-film)
- Feel: a thin flexible layer that sits on top — slightly more hand than DTG.
- Fabric: sticks to almost anything — cotton, poly blends, nylon, canvas totes, even hats.
- Look: punchy, opaque color on any garment color with no separate underbase step; very durable wash after wash.
How to choose
Pick DTG for soft, photo-real prints on cotton tees in small batches. Pick DTF when you need bold color on dark or synthetic fabrics, mixed garment types in one order, or maximum durability. For many orders either works — the live quote shows both.
