Puff print is the raised, slightly foamy texture you've felt on premium streetwear and vintage athletic tees. It's a screen-printing technique that adds real dimension — the design literally lifts off the shirt — and it instantly reads more expensive.
How it works
A special additive is mixed into the ink. When the print hits the heat dryer, the ink expands and rises, creating a soft 3D relief. It's a physical effect, not a visual trick — you can feel it.
What designs suit it
- Bold lettering & thick lines — the raised effect makes them pop.
- Simple shapes & logos — clean areas puff evenly.
- Avoid fine detail — tiny text and thin lines blur as the ink expands.
Puff vs. standard print
Standard screen printing lays flat and handles fine detail; puff trades detail for texture and a premium hand-feel. Many designs mix both — a flat detailed element with a puffed headline. It's a screen-print add-on, so it's best for bolder, few-color art in a run.
