Water-Based vs Plastisol Ink: The Eco Guide

Screen printing comes down to two ink families. Plastisol sits on top of the fabric; water-based ink dyes into the fibers. Both look great — they just feel, wear, and impact the planet differently.
Water-based ink
- Feel: ultra-soft — the design dyes into the shirt with almost no hand. The "vintage" print feel.
- Eco: no PVC or phthalates; cleans up with water. The greener choice.
- Best on: light-colored 100% cotton, soft retail-style tees, and tonal designs.
Plastisol ink
- Feel: a slight raised layer you can feel — that classic tee print.
- Opacity: bright, bold, and bulletproof on dark garments without fuss.
- Best on: dark shirts, athletic blends, and high-contrast spot-color art.
Which should you pick?
Want a soft, sustainable, retail feel on light cotton? Go water-based. Need punchy color on dark or synthetic garments with maximum durability? Plastisol. Many brands mix: water-based for the soft drops, plastisol for the bold ones.
